Hi Leo, There is a free utility called CPU-Z which when run will identify which slots your RAM is installed in and also give you a wealth of other useful information about your system. Give it a try and you should have the information you need. Intel Flex memory mode allowed mismatched memory to run in dual channel mode up to the amount of memory that matched, and single channel for the rest, and as far as I know, still does allow you to mismatch ram. A 4gb stick and 8 gb stick would run in DC for the first 8gb, then in SC for the remaining 4GB, seamlessly.

1. As with all CPUs the fewer sticks of RAM the better. Performance is not an issue, stability might be if you're overclocking. Just note that the 8GB sticks are far cheaper than the 16GB ones. 2. AMD recommends 3600MHz, after 3733MHz internal CPU memory dividers come into play which will make for lower performance, so don't go higher than that. None other than a single stick with large capacity. You'll have only one 64bit data channel for data throughput (sorta like a one way street). With dual channel the CPU's memory controller can communicate with both channels at the same time (two way street) which offers higher memory bandwidth (128bit data channel).
RAM Slot Order: Make sure you know the difference for PC, Mac.
Having 2 ram slots doesn't affect anything, other than the fact that upgrade options are more limited compared to having 4 slots. Performance will be the same. That said, even the lowest end B250 (Intel) or B350 (AMD) motherboards typically feature 4 ram slots. If you need to use them, then do so. Jul 30, 2005. #5. The only thing to consider is if you plan on using Dual Channel with your RAM. Alot of MOBOs that support dual channel require pairing of course, but if you fill all the slots it bumps the FSB down! So read very carefully on what your board says about this. The greater the power of your GPU, or the graphics card, the great amount of information that it calculates and the lesser time taken for So, I understand the heavy lifting is done by the GPU, so it's only fair to suppose a 256-bit GPU will do better than a 128-bit. the game has used up all available physical and virtual memory. I'm using R.

In reply to photophile • Nov 15, 2014 I think I'd change all the ram - ram is cheap - at the same time and have x4 modules of 2Gb each. It's usually good to keep the ram modules the same in kind and capacity. They are easy to change as long as the cpu cooler is not in the way. Reply Reply with quote Reply to thread Complain. No. If you refer to putting you RAM on any of the slots available on your motherboard, the answer is yes, but, if you have 2 RAM sticks, it's desirable to put them in the slots with the same color, so they take the advantage of dual-channel technology.
Are More RAM Modules Better for Gaming? 4 x 4GB vs. 2 x 8GB.
Yes you can install different size pairs in a Mac with 4 slots. However, Mac are picky and it is best to purchase modules from suppliers like OWC or Crucial that specialize in Mac memory. No, they do not all have to be the same although many here have found that the should be the same in side-by-side slots. There is more to ram config than just how many sticks, depends on other factors too. Whats the CPU, motherboard and ram spec? Generally, 4 sticks are harder to run at higher speeds as it stresses the ram controller more. Vote level 2 Op · just now I7 12700k, Msi z690 mpg edge mobo, Corsair vengeance rgb 3200mhz ram Vote. No, will be better w/ 4x8GB, less stress on the MC (memory controller) with only 4 sticks and ever so slightly better performance, only fill all slots if maxing out the DRAM ASUS Deluxe, max RAM is.
Do all RAM memory slots have to be the sa… - Apple Community.
Answer (1 of 6): Memory is controlled by the memory controller in your system. All relatively modern computer systems have the memory controller as a part of the CPU. This means if you have an AMD Ryzen chip, the memory controller is on the CPU. If you have an Intel Core i processor, the memory. Look at Task Manager again and Memory. When you place your mouse pointer over an area, see what it shows. See example image below. Click on, tap, or activate image to enlarge it. You may want to run a Memory check too. Using the search icon, type memory in the box. See example image below. Click on Run as administrator.
Adding more RAM to PC: use all 4 slots or only 2.
There are a couple of reasons why motherboards come with 4 RAM slots, even if you’re not going to use them all right away. First, it improves upgradeability as you can always expand total RAM capacity later by adding more memory. Second, it allows you to have two slots per channel when they are run in dual-channel mode. That is, it is better to use many smaller size RAM sticks to populate all channels than just a single or two large size sticks inserted into 1 or 2 memory channels. There are very strict rules for DIMM slots population on multichannel memory systems. Many problems with computers are caused by not following these rules.
SOLVED: Windows 10 Won't Use Full RAM - A.
You can use all of them and be fine as long as all slots have the same ram and ram speed Of course not, what the point of the mobo manufacturer putting 4 DIMM slots on the board if it didn't work! I never said it wouldn't work, I know it will work he just told me it could be more temperamental. With uneven amounts, memory cannot be interleaved and has to be mapped first to one stick and then the other. A program that is accessing a large contiguous chunk of memory will find almost all of its access going to one stick and there will be no bandwidth combination. Followed by the answer from mVincent: Additional Notes: For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot. Random-Access Memory (RAM) is essential for the effective working of your computer. RAM has exceptionally high read-and-write capabilities, which allow it to store all the concurrent processes on a computer. Faster and better RAM is essential to improve a system's multi-tasking, which leads us nicely to the main topic of discussion: optimized RAM.

1. “My RAM is never full, so I don’t need more ram”. As Bill Gates allegedly said (though he denies it, quote still floats around like a rumor), “ 640K is more memory than anyone will ever.
Is 1 or 2 sticks of ram better? - Linus Tech Tips.
If the system fails to run with any one of the RAM installed, then that stick of RAM is faulty. Similarly, check the slots in use by inserting a known working stick of RAM in it and running your computer. If it fails to run on any one slot, then the slot in question is faulty rendering the RAM inserted in it unusable by Windows. No it’s never bad to use all your RAM slots. What’s bad is mixing ram of different timings and specs. For best performance buy RAMs with same speed, timing and latencies. If you use RAMs with different speeds and timing you might notice your system little laggy and.

The Ryzen 9 3900X system was consistently a few frames faster with 4 RAM modules, but not to the degree where you'd notice a difference. The performance gains seen when fully populating the DIMM.
2 or 4 RAM slots, does it matter if I only want 16GB RAM?.
Open slots trumps the small gains from memory bandwidth. If it's a board with only 2 slots, a single 8GB stick is superior. If it's a board with 4 slots, then dual 4GB sticks are superior due to the increased bandwidth. Basically, yes dual sticks have better performance, but it's not a huge impact in the tasks you'll be doing.

Dan_D said: Two DIMM slots is the way to go for ultra-high speed RAM. That said, most people will probably never push RAM clocks further than you can generally achieve on Z390. I've gone as high as 4,133MHz on Z390 using 4x4GB modules. I've also gone to 3866MHz using 4x8GB modules. If it's got 4 slots and can take max of 16GB of RAM then I doubt it can handle 8GB sticks(if it would it would say 32GB max). Find the manual for the board but im sure you won't be able to use 8GB sticks Agreed, check the details for the motherboard. I would generally say that you should use less slots with better RAM if you have it. As long as slots 1 & 2 have the same color retention clips they should run as dual-channel. There's a lot more to RAM than just speed (MHz) and size (GB) and Dell PCs can be very fussy about RAM. Some brands are just better quality and then there's the number of chips on each module ("rank"), latency etc, etc. So mixing brands can make a.
